Why It’s Important To Update Your Estate Plan

Updated: Feb 18, 2021

Having an estate plan in place is extremely important. While it may be intimidating, it also gives a sense of comfort. It means that your estate will be managed in accordance with your wishes. This makes the entire process easier and leaves less stress on your family members. As you get older, your life is always changing. It is imperative to keep an up-to-date estate plan. The attorneys at Hildebrand Law Firm, LLC, have years of experience helping clients plan for their future.

When Should I Update My Estate Plan?

It can be difficult to know when to update your will, trust or other estate planning documents. As a rule of thumb, you should update your plan after every major life event. This includes:

  • Separation from a partner or spouse

  • Marriage to a new partner

  • Birth of a child

  • Change in finances

  • Change in business circumstances

In between these updates, you should also check on your estate plan to make sure your interests are still being met. Some people do this annually. In general, it's a good idea to review all your estate planning documents every 3-5 years.

As dedicated estate planning lawyers, we are here to guide you and give you direction whether you are creating a plan for the first time or updating it down the road.
